About This Site

About this site:

Hi! This site was created by me, Bernadette Johnson, as a final project for the class ENGL6888, Literary Computing, at the University of Georgia during fall semester 2003, taught by Dr. Stephen Ramsay. All of the wonderful illustrations were created by the comic book artist Jeff Austin, and colored and resized by Jeff Allen.

This is my attempt to put a translation of Beowulf online in an easily readable and accessible format. I chose a translation by Lesslie Hall, dated 1892, mainly because it was one of two versions of Beowulf that I could find that is currently in the public domain. However, this text includes a very good summary of the story in the preface, a glossary of proper names encountered in the story, and footnotes that go into detail on other possible interpretations of certain passages. It is well worth reading in my opinion.

Dragon guarding his hoard of treasure. I tried to keep the text as close to the original formatting as possible by keeping the translator's sections and section headings, margin notes, footnotes, row numbering, and other features that help illuminate the main text, intact and as accurate as possible using the means at my disposal. I did have to make a few changes for reasons of clarity and aesthetics (i.e. footnotes that were divided over two pages in the book were moved to the page to which they really belong, etc.).

There are many translations of Beowulf available that are more modern-reader friendly. I personally enjoyed the Kevin Krossley-Holland version in the book The Anglo-Saxon World: An Anthology, which we read in Topics in Medieval Literature last semester. For good information on choosing a translation, go to Editor Eric's "Picking a Translation to Read", which includes a section on Beowulf.
